TRICK OR TREAT!

HALLOWEEN CANDY? NO... RUNNING CANDY!

It used to be "GU", a small packet of icing like sugar, was the only choice for a glucose energy boost during long training runs, rides and races. But as more recreational and professional athletes now participate in triathlons, half and full marathons, the industry and brands have evolved. There are now so many different options, all resembling and tasting like your kids favorite candy. You have Jelly Belly Sport Beans; Gu Chomps, Honey Stinger and Power Bar Energy Blast gum drops; Clif Shot Bloks and protein Roks. Besides the glucose, the "candies" are also packed with electrolytes and caffeine, so please keep away from the children! Happy Halloween and Marathon to all you NYC runners!

CAROLINA HERRERA PRINT JACQUARD GOWN $7990 / TREK SPEED CONCEPT 9.8 TRIATHLON BIKE $7000

So many choices, so little disposable income, but for those with an extra $7500 burning a hole in their pockets, above are a couple of options. The Trek is billed as "the fastest bike on the planet" and the gown as "electrifying... packing the voltage you love". I love their similar color palettes. Who will be victorious in the competition between the socialite and the triathlete?

SUNDAY NIGHT AT THE SPORTS MOVIES: PART 3

Yes, it is that time of the month again for my Sunday Night Favorite Sport Flicks reviews! I give you yet again another group of winning classics, leading off with a baseball movie as we are in the midst of the World Series playoffs. So get your DVD's cued up, the popcorn popping and start watching! Click images and titles for movie preview.

There are so many classic baseball movies to choose from, so I decided to go with the girls. This is the true story of The All-American Girls' Professional Baseball League, founded in 1943 when most of the men of baseball-playing age were away fighting World War II. The owners of the baseball teams, not wanting baseball to be dormant indefinitely, decided to form teams with women. Directed by Penny Marshall, the movie stars Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell, Geena Davis, Lori Petty and Tom Hanks in some of their most entertaining roles and delivering some of their most famous lines ("There is no crying in baseball!")

This film documents the evolution of BMX or Bicycle Motocross which began with kids in the 1970’s modifying their Schwinn Sting-Ray bicycles to look like motorcycles. Narrated by Jesse James, this documentary is the first film to take a serious look at the evolution of the sport, from the streets of 1960's suburban neighborhoods to today's stadium-packed televised action sports competitions. The directors have assembled a 30-year timeline packed with rare archival footage and interviews with the pioneers and legendary riders that delivers an historical perspective to the sport of BMX and makes you feel like you were there.

This beautifully photographed documentary tells the remarkable story of Brazilian Formula One racing driver Ayrton Senna and spans the racing legend’s years as an Formula 1 champion, from his opening season in 1984 to his untimely death a decade later.  Far more than a film for racing fans, Senna takes a cinematic approach and makes full use of astounding footage, drawn from over 15,000 hours of archival film, much of which was previously unseen.

In one of his most legendary roles, Paul Newman stars as cocky poolroom hustler "Fast" Eddie Felson,  a swaggering pool shark punk.  Felson's bravado causes him to challenge the king of the poolroom "Minnesota Fats", played Jackie Gleason, to a high-stakes match. After losing in a heartbreaking marathon, Felson faces a battle to regain his confidence and his game. He hits rock bottom and teams up with an unscrupulous manager, played by George C. Scott, who guides him to beat Fats, but he finds there is a terrible price to pay for redemption. The shadowy black-and-white cinematography, and darkness lit by the dim glow of a bar lamp or the overhead glare of a pool-table light, creates an atmosphere appropriate for this drama.

This docudrama is the unbelievable true story of two climbers, Joe Simpson and Simon Yates, and their summit of Siula Grande in Peru. They reach the peak, but disaster strikes on the descent when Simpson plunges off the vertical face of an ice ledge and breaks his leg. Roped together as darkness falls and a blizzard rages, Yates tries to lower his friend to safety. When Simpson slides off an overhang with no way of climbing back up, Simon must make the unfathomable decision to cut the rope. Simpson falls into a crevasse but is lucky to survive. Summoning unimaginable reserves of physical and spiritual strength, he crawls over the cliffs and canyons of the Andes and reaches base camp and his friend.

"SLIDE YOUR BRAINS OUT"

Thomas Campbell's surfing photography has noticable lack of gloss and polish. Unlike most surf photographers, he eschews the familiar fish-eye shots or tightly cropped land angles and instead focusing on mood and vibe.

An artist, photographer and filmmaker, Thomas Campbell was raised on the aesthetic of the early 1980s skateboarding culture.  In the mid-1990s, he moved to New York and immersed himself in the scene around Alleged Gallery, where he quickly befriended and exhibited among the generation of artists who would star in the landmark 2004 exhibition "Beautiful Losers". His first feature-length film, "The Seedling", came out in 1999, followed by "Sprout" in 2004 and "The Present" in 2009.

The first of ten projected volumes in UM YEAH PRESS' surf photobook series, "Slide Your Brains Out" is a collection of his work from the past 15 years. Often lo-fi and gritty, other times lush and saturated, Campbell's compositions, which include portraits and action shots of some of the best surfers in the world are always evocative and ethereal, appealing to both surfers and land lovers alike.

THE HYBRIDS

Last year I bought one of the best jackets ever, the NORTHFACE "CRIMPTASTIC" or what I like to call the "stretchy puffy". Its down insulated on the front and back with strategically placed Polartec® Power Stretch® side and arm panels to combine thermal warmth with maximum mobility. Its puffy where you need it and sleek where you don't.

This year I am seeing lots of other "hybrid" jackets for both men and women that combine different fabrics and fills to provide insulation where warmth is most needed with stretch where mobility is most required.

Above are four of of my favorites for the season. All come in lots of different color combinations, so if you want to stand out in the crowd or go stealth, the choice is yours.

FREEFALL

Today Felix Baumgartner, an Austrian skydiver, basejumper and daredevil, smashed the records for the highest and fastest freefall in history, leaping from the stratosphere 24 miles above the earth's surface and breaking the speed of sound in his descent.

Perhaps because the new Bond movie "Skyfall" is out and I'm hearing Adele's sultry theme song in the background, I am reminded of an old 007 classic "Moonraker"I thought I would share.

"FASHION'S NIGHT OUT" MEET "FITNESS DAY IN"

Coming this Saturday October 13 is the first ever "SWEATY SATURDAY" which will bring together New York City’s hottest workout studios for a day devoted entirely to health and fitness. Gyms and fitness boutiques like Flywheel, Barry's Bootcamp, As One, Tracy Anderson Method, Physique 57, Pure Yoga, Peak PerformanceSLT (whose owner Amanda Freeman founded the event) and many more will all come together for a single cause. A portion of the proceeds will go to HealthCorps, founded by Dr. Mehmet Oz, whose national wellness movement helps fight child obesity and bring awareness to schools nationwide. This day-long event will transform the city’s fitness landscape into a big workout party with studios offering special classes, amazing music, and lots of good freebies.

So go workout, have fun, get free stuff, do some good for yourself and somebody else... sounds like a pretty good way to spend a Saturday to me!

REAL MEN WEAR PINK

October is a Breast Cancer Awareness Month and one of the most uplifting places to see this campaign in action is in the NFL. For the month of October, all the players from every team wear pink cleats, gloves, mouthguards, wristbands and other accessories in support of the NFL program "A Crucial Catch". In partnership with the American Cancer Society, the campaign focuses on the importance of annual screenings and provides outreach to women in underserved communities.

Yesterday was the first sunday of October and one of the most touching images from the day was that of 49ers wide receiver Kyle Williams dropping to his knees and pointing to the sky after catching a pass. His grandmother died from the disease. Williams said after the game, “I look forward to the whole month and being able to support it and wear pink. I was just saying hello. She was my rock.”
